 7/16

Port of call today was Skagway. Weather was mid 60’s and sunny. For sure we have been very lucky with the weather.

We took a helicopter glacier - dog sled tour this morning, which was just unbelievable. Brian’s family and Wendy & I loaded into a 6 passenger copter for a fight through the mountains to the glacier. A first for all of us.

Pics of the flight over the mountains to the glacier.

View of the base camp. 240 sled dogs and a team of workers live on the glacier from May to September. The dogs consume about 1,700 lbs of dog food a week.
Old guy trying not to fall on very slippery snow.

Staff housing huts.
A 10 dog team pulled our sleds.

We each got a chance to drive the sleds as backup drivers. Good thing the real musher was driving the sled.

20 day old pup born on the ice.

In the afternoon we headed out to pan for gold to pay for this trip. NOT!  But did we did pan a few flakes.

The tour also took us up the Klondike highway into Yukon of Canada. Thousands of miners took this mountainous trek in  the 1890’s Klondike Gold rush. Beautiful views all along the way.

Tonight was capped off with a broadway style play and country and western dancing. Such fun.
